Helpers: Whilst the Acquire Player is running, these helper plugins operate simultaneously and are always in the background. Typically these are used to connect to remote media or datasources so that the information or content is then cached locally on the player.
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an international standard for providing lists of information. Many websites and information providers are able to provide information about their products, news, weather, traffic information and more using this simple format. Acquire can display any RSS2.0 format feeds, together with any associated media, but to prevent the players ‘hammering’ the provider’s servers, this helper program collects the feed on a regular, configurable time, and caches the information on the player device, ready for when it needs to be displayed.
If the network link fails, the helper will continue to use the cached version for a period you choose before deleting the feed (which causes Acquire Player to not show any pages containing the feed). The helper also provides filters to allow you to restrict certain items out of the feed, or only include items in the feed, to make any 3rd party or generalized feeds more appropriate to your use. Note: please see the MyMessage web service below for details of how you can create your own feeds.

One of the most powerful features of Acquire is it’s ability to do more than just show content, by the use of plugins such as ACQs and Helpers. The most powerful ACQ and Helper is the CiY plugins as they allow you to write your own programs (using Visual Basic Script or Java Script), changing the flow of Acquire’s scripts, variables an much more. This is similar to Microsoft’s Office Macro Scripting facility, but more powerful.

Although you can use Acquire’s built-in methods of transferring content to the players, you may want the players to collect some specific content external to these methods. The RemoteMedia helper will let you do this. By entering an HTML or FTP address into the RemoteMedia configuration, the players will visit those locations and download the files on your chosen timescale, then rename them and save them alongside your media so that you can show them as part of your presentation. Our customers have used this helper for collecting and displaying the font pages of well known newspapers from JPEGs on their websites, downloading latest versions of XML datafiles for near-live availability displays, or for downloading podcasts of the latest news.

Whether using a local or network shared folder, the Folder Slideshow helper will regularly scan the folders for media of your chosen type and maintain a list of those files. Using Acquire’s variables feature, the media can be displayed whenever you require in the presentation, with a different piece of media each time the Acquire page is displayed.

By producing a simple XML file, and providing it on a webserver, the Dynascript helper will collect the file and tell Acquire to play the pages, play the scripts, and even change the variables as defined in the XML playlist. The players using this helper will display the playlist downloaded in the XML file unless you have scheduled a playlist to them. You can use this to create a simple playlist generation system for the players, as we have provided with the Online Management system.

Using the supplied GPS receiver, the player can be installed in a moving vehicle (bus, coach, ferry, taxi, etc), and depending upon the location and direction of travel, it will change the playlist to show content appropriate to them. Up to 1024 areas can be defined to ensure your content is appropriate to the location. Also provides ‘raw’ GPS information into Acquire to provide the content with information such as location, direction and speed for use with on-screen maps, etc.

Then using the helper and supplied Bluetooth dongle, this helper provides you with everything you need to provide your own bluecasting solution to target your message at users with mobile phones and PDAs up to 100metres from your player. If Bluecasting, the helper uses intelligent marketing to avoid annoying prospective users by only sending messages to potential users if they accept the invitation to receive the file(s), and then remembers their choice and doesn’t try again for 24 hours. Alternatively, it can be used so that the user requests the file from Acquire, or even just to monitor the number of people with Bluetooth nearby and affect the playlist.

To make people look at your screens, why not provide a public service and show the current travel information for the London underground in your presentation? The Tube helper ‘screen scrapes’ the official London Underground website for status and information on all of the lines and provides them as variables for use in Acquire or any Flash animation you may want to use. Note you may need to inform the London Underground of your use of the information if you are using it commercially.

By entering the location of your player into the helper, it will regularly check for the latest weather conditions and provide a wealth of this and other weather-related information straight into Acquire. You can then display the information natively in Acquire, or even show it on a Flash weather map, just like a TV station. Note you may need to inform weather.com about your use of the information commercially.

Using the background Music Player pack, you are able to produce scheduled audio playlists which run in the background of your main presentation. At key points in either your audio playlist or your visual playlist, the two can synchronise together to create a bigger impact than either one alone.

Acquire has built-in controls for triggers from Serial, Keyboard and TCP-IP sources, and by using ACQs and helpers, a variety of other triggers can control the playlist. The normal playlist controls within Acquire are sequential – that is, each page is played in sequence only if it is allowed to play at that time of day/day of week/week of year, etc. The Timed Trigger helper allows you to schedule pages to display at EXACT scheduled times, overriding any currently playing content. This is ideal for if you have to show content at specific times, such as ‘on the hour news’.

ACQs : Small parts of Acquire, these plugins are selected to be used as part of pages or when the pages appear. These are typically visual ones (such as live video streams from the Internet or webcams, slideshows of content on a page, etc), although they can also be invisible (such as printing information, sending a Bluetooth message, etc).
This ACQ can be used to run an executable program when it is shown. It can be used to operate 3rd party programs which are then quit when the Acquire page times out. For example, it could be used to run provide controlled access to Email, Word Processor and other programs. The application loader can even load the correct default application for the filetype opened.

Whether using it with members of the public, in your shop or office, or even at exhibitions, the feedback ACQ captures the information from your questions and questionnaires and uploads them securely to the Feedback servers. Here, the information is held secure, and transformed into a .CSV file which can easily be loaded into Microsoft Excel and may other database systems. Also, an optional service scans the supplied information and can automatically deliver SMS text messages or PDFs/Emails to the respondents for an instant ‘thank you’ or response to their question.

One of the often requested features is whether Acquire can playback Powerpoint (see Associated Quicklink for more information and other ways to play Powerpoint). The Powerpoint ACQ is the most powerful method as it allows complete interaction with the Powerpoint presentation. Note that it requires the Powerpoint program to be installed on the player units. If you just want to play back a Powerpoint presentation, use one of the other methods listed here.

By scheduling a page containing this ACQ, your screens and monitors will go into ‘sleep’ mode, effectively reducing their power usage, whilst leaving the players powered up to allow deployments and remote support to occur. This has the extra advantage that whilst nothing is ‘playing’, the processor and hard drive will cool down and will effectively lengthen the life of your equipment, as well as the post-playout reporting will show this page playing overnight instead of normal content, so more realistic playout figures will be shown.

Although not as popular since the introduction of USB ports, RS232 is actually still used by many USB devices, as they create a virtual COM port on your player when you install their drivers. These devices can be controlled using the Serial ACQ. Devices such as LCD/Plasma screens, lighting controllers, access control devices and more can be controlled using this ACQ.

Web-Based services
Acquire’s powerful technology can be controlled in a number of ways, and the use of external triggers, events, playlists, content approvals and more can be achieved via secure websites which control how the players operate and playback the content you have designed in the editor.
Below are some of the plugins we have available. Please contact us if you have a specific requirement which is not covered here and if we haven’t got it, we can probably develop it for you quickly and at a fraction of the cost of developing it yourself.
Online management system Developed in conjunction with Delivering Digital, our online management system provides users with a simple to use web-based interface for managing their playlists and creating messages, either globally across their network, or on a site-specific basis. For a small monthly fee, the system is fully configurable, and secured by individual users logins. The system allows relatively untrained staff to control the presentation on their screens in a matter of minutes, with no need for an editor at each site. We can even develop specific user interfaces for you to provide your own branded network control interface.
MyMessage
Mymessage is a very simple messaging service to allow your site owners to create their own RSS feeds which can be used in their presentations. Without having to train or learn how to use the Acquire editor or other tools, your customers can simply login to a website and type in the messages and information (with images and other content) they want to display in the layouts you have designed and at the times you have predetermined. The service can be branded to your own style.
All web based services are provided for an additional fee.
